Yes, this is over a month old, but I took some time to make a one-year DVD for various family members and its amazing how much time building a DVD can consume. With that excuse out of the way, here’s a short recap of our day at the Apple Orchard with Kyler.

This has become somewhat of a tradition, as it was the first “outing” we took him on when last year just a few weeks after he was born. As you can see, he enjoyed it much more this time around.

Perfect (and warm) fall days are a rare thing in Minnesota so when one comes around we try to take advantage of it. Yesterday we spent some time taking lots of fall pictures (which gave me a chance to learn my new camera’s settings a bit better) and we’ll post more of those pictures later.

Today we started by grabbing Starbucks (after missing the late service at church) and heading to the docks in Wayzata where Kyler got to check out the lake, boats, ducks and trains All of which he found fascinating. We then went shopping where Kyler tried on some Halloween hats.

Kyler and I spent our first weekend alone while Johna was out of town. That meant that Kyler got to do things mom doesn’t allow ;) like looking in the refrigerator. The weekend went well. Kyler and I had fun going to the toy store (and getting a school bus - which he loves seeing on the road), grabbing lunch together and running errands. It was a fun weekend but it reminded me how much easier it is to do “outings” when Johna is there as well.

It’s football time again!

Kyler (who normally could care less about anything related to the TV) was willing to sit down with me for a while and check out one of the games. Now I just need to get a photo of him in his Broncos PJs.

Every night, Kyler has a set routine. It starts with dinner, part of which should be placed in your hair at some point. It then moves to expressing how unhappy you are with the idea of being cleaned up briefly. Of course, that almost always leads to the need for a “tubby,” which he likes very much. Even the end of the tubby is fun because he gets to see the baby in a mirror wrapped in a towel. Putting PJs is just OK, assuming he gets to crawl a bit. It ends with a couple of bedtime stories on dad’s lap. As you can see, he’s often very tired at this point, but loves to sit and listen.

I’m a firm believer that the quality of your time off is measured by your ability to effectively keep yourself away from everything that’s going on back home. I’m a firm believer that your effectiveness in doing THAT is found in the amount of time you spend “catching up” when you get back home or back to work. (And if that doens’t make sense - you don’t have enough to do at your own office.) ;-)

Moving on…

Here are some more pictures from our recent trip to Dallas. I would have gotten these out sooner, but [insert excuse from the first paragraph here].

A friend of ours setup a photo shoot with a bunch of families that had babies that were all about the same age. It was a GREAT idea and you can see selected photos by visiting the photographer’s website or checking out the page for the baby photo shoot.

The shoot was at Como park, which meant we would take highway 394 to get there - except it was shut down that weekend. We took the detour that was set up.

Kids at home: never take the detour. It can only end up taking way more time than you think it will.

Anyway… 45 minutes late, we ended up at the shoot, which was just enough time to sneak in some great shots.

Since he was born in September … and in Minnesota … Kyler has spent very little time outside in the sun. When we went to Florida this past January, we quickly saw that he wasn’t crazy about being out in the sun. On our first couple of days there, we bought him a hat to keep his eyes in the shade, which he found mildly acceptable.

Now that Summer is around the corner, we thought we’d try to find some sunglasses. We were curious to see if he would be OK with them or would just want them off his face. As you can see, he thought they were pretty cool.
